  1. nature-nurture controversy
  2. Scientists over the relative importance of
  3. environment (upbringing, experience, and
  4. learning) and heredity (genetic inheritance)
  5. in determining the make-up of an organism,
  6. especially as related to human personality
  7. and intelligence. Particularly controversial
  8. is the reason for differences between
  9. individuals, for example in performing
  10. intelligence tests. The environmentalist
  11. position assumes that individuals do not
  12. differ significantly in their inherited
  13. mental abilities and that subsequent
  14. differences are due to learning, or to
  15. differences in early experiences. Opponents
  16. insist that certain differences in the
  17. capacities of individuals (and hence their
  18. behaviour) can be attributed to inherited
  19. differences in their genetic make-up.
